Do you know what …- . – . .-. .- -. spells in Morse Code? It spells veteran.
My father, John Bentley, is a veteran who served in the Navy as a Radioman 2nd Class. He joined in 1961. It was a time when the Navy used Morse Code. He attended the Naval Training in Great Lakes, IL on Lake Michigan. He had 12 weeks of training and then he received orders to go to the Communications Training Center in Bainbridge, MD. During his 7 months of Radiomen A School, he learned about communications.
He was assigned to a Naval Communication Center at Port Lyaudey in Morocco, which is in North Africa. He was there for 24 months. Then he was transferred to Norfolk, VA aboard the USS Albany. He served on the ship, a guidance missile cruiser, for 2 ½ years. The ship made 3 Mediterranean cruises for 6 months of deployment. He also made 3 winter cruises to the Virgin Island where he had 4 months of gunnery practice.
He had just joined the Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was supposed to leave the service in December of 1965, but a US strategic air bomber was lost in Spain. The bomber lost 3 nuclear warheads in Palamares Bay. The ship that he was on had to leave Norfolk, VA to retrieve the lost missiles. That was the first time the US Navy used an underwater craft similar to the Alvin. They found all 3 bombs.
My father said that the Navy was an enjoyable experience. He saw many places including the Port of Amsterdam. His ship was the first naval war ship to go to the Port of Amsterdam after WWII was over. My father enjoyed his time at sea because of the good food. Many men were seasick, so there were always tons of leftovers. He received a Cuban Missile Crisis pin and good conduct medal. He was mustered out of the Navy in May of 1965.
For homework, you will be interview a veteran and learn about his/her experience. You may post your writing on our blog if you have your veteran’s permission.
